Where can Orange County patients get GAE?
The Fountain Valley office serves patients from Fountain Valley, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Tustin, Santa Ana, Orange, Anaheim, Lake Forest, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, Huntington Beach, and surrounding Orange County communities, as well as patients traveling from Riverside County and north San Diego County.
This page describes the actual practice location where Fountain Valley patients are seen. SoCal Interventional does not have a physical office in every community named above.
How does genicular artery embolization relieve knee pain?
Knee embolization works on the blood supply of the inflamed joint lining rather than on the bone or cartilage. An interventional radiologist accesses an artery in the thigh through a tiny puncture, guides a microcatheter to the genicular branches that feed the painful synovium, and delivers small particles to reduce that flow. Pain relief develops over the following weeks as inflammation settles. It is an outpatient procedure and does not prevent a later knee replacement if one is ever needed.
Who is a candidate for GAE in Fountain Valley?
Adults with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis pain that has persisted despite physical therapy, medication or injections, who want to delay or avoid knee replacement or are not candidates for surgery. An examination and a recent knee X-ray or MRI confirm candidacy before GAE is scheduled.
GAE is generally considered for adults with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis pain that persists despite conservative care such as physical therapy, weight management, anti-inflammatory medication, or injections, and who are either not candidates for knee replacement or wish to delay it. It is also discussed with patients who have had a knee replacement but continue to experience pain attributed to inflamed soft tissue. Candidacy is confirmed with an examination and knee imaging; pain from mechanical problems, infection, or advanced deformity may be better served by other treatment.
How do I get to the Fountain Valley office?
The office is on Warner Avenue just east of the 405 freeway, in the Pacific Coast Multi Specialty Surgery building. From south county (Mission Viejo, Laguna Hills, Lake Forest) take the 5 north to Warner Avenue; from Newport Beach or Costa Mesa take the 405 north or the 73 to Warner Avenue. Parking instructions are provided when you book, and a companion should drive you home on procedure day. The same Fountain Valley interventional radiologist also evaluates patients for prostate artery embolization and uterine fibroid embolization at this location.
What is recovery like after GAE?
Because GAE requires only a small arterial access point, recovery is short. Most patients walk the same day and return to normal daily activity within a few days. Some experience temporary skin discoloration or mild soreness around the knee for one to two weeks. Pain relief develops progressively over several weeks to a few months, and follow-up visits track function and pain scores.
What are the risks and limitations of GAE?
Reported risks of GAE include transient knee pain or swelling after the procedure, temporary skin color changes near the treated area, access-site bruising, and rare non-target embolization. Some patients have limited or short-lived improvement. GAE does not rebuild cartilage and is not a substitute for knee replacement in every case; the goal is meaningful pain reduction and improved function.
Does insurance cover GAE, and what should I bring?
Insurance coverage for GAE varies by plan and is evolving as clinical evidence grows. SoCal Interventional accepts most PPO plans, Medicare, and self-pay, and reviews your specific benefits before scheduling. Bringing recent knee X-rays or MRI reports and a list of treatments already tried speeds up the evaluation.
